Fronleichnam

«Öse Herrgottstaag» (Our Lord's Day) is the name given to the Feast of Corpus Christi in Appenzell.

This famous occasion is a magnificent opportunity seized by the Innerrhoder people to indulge their pleasure in colourful ceremonial processions. The monstrance containing the consecrated host is carried under the canopy by the clergy in ceremonial robes, accompanied by the Lord's Grenadiers. The procession comprises banner-bearers from church and secular associations, standard-bearers of the corporations with the «Junkers», former guards, officials, church elders in their robes carrying candles, servers in blue cassocks and white shirts, girls dressed in white, a long crocodile of school children, the brass band, and the «Herrgottsschützen» (soldiers of the Lord) in military uniform. Most impressive of all is the long file of women in their local feast-day costume, a dress of incomparable dignity and splendid elegance, consisting of an ankle-length pleated skirt made of very fine plain-coloured woollen material, and the long-sleeved «Schlotte» worn over the embroidered bodice. Particularly conspicuous among the religious groups are the female members of St. John's Society, the mystery-bearers known as «Täfelimeedle». Following a tradition that goes back several centuries, fifteen maidens carry painted wooden signs in the procession, representing the mysteries of the joyful, sorrowful and glorious rosary. These girls wear the charming traditional maiden's costume.
