The villages and hamlets lie almost fairytale-like in the Appenzell landscape. This makes it easy to believe the legend to be true: a long time ago a giant was hiking across the Alpstein mountain range, carrying a sack full of houses on his back. As he was climbing over the Säntis mountain, its peak tore a hole into the sack and the houses tumbled out here and there. When the giant realised that his luggage was getting lighter, he looked back. As the houses were lying so daintily in the countryside, he decided to leave them there.
