Appenzellerland for nature lovers – 6 hours

1. TAKE THE HOLZWEG (3 HRS)

Your excursion starts amid the hilly landscape of the Appenzell hinterland, on the Wood Trail (green line on the overview map).

Together with woodworm Sämi, you’ll discover the sheer diversity of wood in Waldstatt. This themed trail encourages you to explore, learn and play, with 16 different information stations. Learn more about natural healer Emma Kunz, pioneering timber construction genius Hermann Blumer and the traditional timber construction companies in the village, among other fascinating subjects.

2. A VISIT OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE IN SWITZERLAND (15 MINS)

A short drive (7 mins; the blue line on the overview map) takes you to the highest municipality in Appenzellerland. Schwellbrunn was voted the most beautiful village in Switzerland by the Swiss population in 2018.

Take a stroll through the village. There’s plenty of parking at the entrance to the village. We’ve marked the best photo opportunities on the map. From there, it’s a short drive (3 minutes) to the Risi car park.

AN IDYLLIC CARRIAGE RIDE (2 HRS 45 MINS)

After a short walk, the carriage will pick you up from the Risi car park (green dot on the overview map). You ride at a leisurely pace through the beautiful landscape, enjoying the spectacular view of the Alpstein range and the hilly Appenzell landscape. After about an hour, you come to the Landscheide Restaurant (orange dot on the overview map), where a delicious meal awaits you.

Advance booking of the carriage ride for 2 people or more with Rösli Brunner at the Landscheide Restaurant is recommended.
