Tour of the Appenzell midland

This tour of the Appenzellerland starts in Teufen. The first section of the trail leads to Speicher, along the foot of the “Eggen”. After a gentle climb you descend rapidly towards Speicherschwendi. Here the hilly countryside of the Appenzellerland presents itself in all its beauty. The tour then continues upwards to Rehetobel. From Rehetobel you can enjoy unique views of the entire Appenzellerland as far as the Alpstein massif with Mount Säntis, the landmark mountain of eastern Switzerland. For once, the following few miles will take you across flatter land, via Kaien to Wald and then onwards to Trogen. There, the cantonal assembly square with the Baroque Grubenmann church and the visitor centre of the Pestalozzi Children’s Village are both worth a visit. You will then continue on via the “Suruggen” range of hills to Landmark and then to Gais. Next on the route is Appenzell, the smallest cantonal capital in Switzerland. There you should take a break from cycling and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the famous picturesque main street. The last leg takes cyclists to Haslen and, after crossing a last ravine, back to Teufen.
