Peasant painting

ALL INFORMATION ON PEASANT PAINTING

Farmer paintings have been part of the customs of the Appenzell region for a long time. The oldest paintings were made shortly before 1600. They are known as Gaiser Wände (Gais walls) and were discovered in 1977 during a renovation project in Gais. Since the 19th century, the herd of cattle has been the main motif of the Senntum paintings.

The alpine journey in the Sunday alpine dairymen's costume, the adornment of people and animals, the lush pastures and the beautiful houses are depicted. The pictures were each depicted in a very idyllic way. Most of the paintings were commissioned by farmers and alpine dairymen who wanted to proudly present their house, their livestock or their alp.
