DETAILED INFORMATION ON TRADITIONAL COSTUMES

Appenzell traditional costumes are true works of art. Herdsmen drive their cattle up the mountain clad in yellow breeches, red waistcoat, a hat decorated with flowers and ribbons, braces with metal ornaments, white knee-high socks and the jewellery that is typical of their profession. A lace embroidery feature the size of a two-frank coin on the women’s collars takes seven hours to stitch by hand. The yellow breeches of the herdsmen are dyed using a secret homemade formula.
